And they prefer utes over sports cars…

After a couple of days in a black Isuzu D-Max running errands around town, Evan told us he was getting noticeably more attention from the fairer sex. Well, that’s interesting, we thought. We should look into it. We did, and, believe it or not, it’s based on fact. American company Insure.com ran a survey of 2,000 respondents, finding out what kind of vehicle is the most attractive; and what colour.

The results from this gave some pretty startling results, confirming trends in the current Australian new car market:

One-third of women rated men who drive utes as the most attractive, followed by sports cars (27%) and SUVs (16%). The least favourite were hybrids, mini vans and mail/delivery trucks.

Black was the overwhelming favourite colour (53%), making up for the fact that it shows up scratches so easily, and is impossible to keep looking clean. The next favourite colours were silver (16%) and red (13%).

So, black utes are at the top of the pile, according to the survey; which might be one reason why utes are currently selling so well in Australia. What’s the deal? Why do women like utes? Is it because they exude that masculine sense of practicality? Is being able to pick up furniture and do runs to the tip actually sexy? And why is black so preferred? I’ve owned one black car, and vowed to never own one again.

On the other hand, men prefer women who drive sports cars (39%), sedans (22%) and SUVs (20%). Utes for women don’t rate as well (10%), but they’re better than hybrid/electric cars (6%) or mini vans (4%).
