How’s this for a Throwback Thursday gem?! A magnificent rebuilt Toyota LandCruiser FJ45 to die for.

We’ve had our fair share of awesome old 4X4s pop up for our Throwback Thursday series, but this magnificent rebuilt Toyota LandCruiser FJ45 has got to be one of the best to date.

According to the vehicle’s owner – the bloke who rebuilt this 1968 Cruiser – the original plan was to use the FJ as a promo vehicle.

“I built it myself to use as a promo vehicle for a business I had,” John explains. “I actually bought the thing nine-years ago. So we went through and rebuilt it, and at the time money was no object, it was just go hard and replace everything in it, and then we got to a point about three years ago where I shut the business I was going to use it for and it went into cotton balls and got stuck in a mate’s shed for a couple of years.”

John’s mate eventually talked him into dragging the Cruiser out of the shed and finishing it off. The biggest issue was the original three-speed gearbox was buggered, and replacement parts are not easy to come by, so a reco four-speed box was fitted instead, which meant the Cruiser also scored a new driveshaft and transfer case.

John reckons he’s “up over 60 grand with it now”, so his asking price of $45k seems perfectly reasonable to us. New gear includes all rubbers, metal guards (no fibreglass here), steel roof, custom tray, custom bull bar, tow bar, new wiring, new brakes including hoses, all new shocks and steering damper, and new bushes.

What’s John going to do with the cash once his rebuilt Toyota LandCruiser FJ45 is out the door? He’s got his eye on the next project: a genuine V8 HK panel van. Once a car guy, always a car guy, eh?
