Surprise! Not really… ANCAP gives the new Defender 5 stars

In a less-than-surprising announcement ANCAP gives the new Defender 5 stars for safety.

Who would’ve thunk it? ANCAP (Australian New Car Assessment Program) has awarded the new Defender 5 stars for safety. Why is this not surprising? Well, for starters, the new Land Rover Defender is one of the most technologically advanced 4X4s on the planet, and it’s jam-packed with safety kit.

Check out this video of the new Defender 110 being subjected to crash testing:

The new Defender scored 85 per cent for Adult and Child Occupant protection, 79 per cent for Safety Assist and achieved a 71 per cent score for Vulnerable Road Users. As well as coming standard with six airbags and up to three ISOFIX points, standard driver assistance technologies on the new Defender include:

  • Emergency Braking
  • Blind Spot Assist
  • 3D Surround Camera
  • Clear Exit Monitor
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Driver Condition Monitor
  • Lane Keep Assist
  • Rear Collision Monitor
  • Rear Traffic Monitor
  • Traffic Sign Recognition and Adaptive Speed Limiter
  • Wade Sensing
  • eCall+ (sends an automatic message to an emergency call centre in case of a crash or collision)
  • Multi Collision Brake (automatically applies the brakes to prevent or mitigate a subsequent impact when the vehicle has been involved in a collision of sufficient severity)

The new Defender is a far cry from the old one when it comes to safety equipment.

According to ANCAP, the new defender exhibited strong performance across the four key areas of safety assessment. “Adult Occupant Protection and Child Occupant Protection scored well, with maximum points recorded for adult occupants in the side impact and oblique pole tests, and for child occupants in the frontal offset and side impact tests,” ANCAP Director – Communications & Advocacy, Rhianne Robson said.

Nick Rogers, Executive Director, Product Engineering, Jaguar Land Rover said: “From the moment we started creating the New Defender, we were obsessed with functional safety and the protection of both the occupants and other road users. We set out to make a vehicle that is the most capable and durable Land Rover ever made, with safety features that truly enhance the driver’s experience. It’s an incredible honour to receive this recognition from ANCAP who have endorsed our New Defender with their five-star rating.”

Yep. The new Defender is a far cry from the old one when it comes to safety.
