With the 4WD show season upon us, our fearless and quite possibly crazy friend Dave Carter from Toyo Tires Australia had the idea of driving Project Rusty from Sydney to Adelaide and then to Perth for the 4WD and Adventure shows. For its maiden voyage. On his own too, we might add. So while this would be a huge task in a brand-new vehicle, you have to remember Rusty is an ex-mines truck with 250,000km on the clock; and that it’s been rebuilt mainly by journalists (with lots of industry help) in their spare time. So to say we were nervous for Dave was an understatement. But you know what? At the time of writing Project Rusty is now sitting in Perth, ready to be displayed on the Toyo Tires stand at the show. Yep, it made it; and according to Dave, it did well. It is a little down on power, so we will get it on the dyno when it returns and tweak it up a bit. And Dave managed to run out of fuel just 4km from the next fuel stop on the Nullarbor thanks to a dicky gauge. Oops. But otherwise, it’s safe to say that Project Rusty will be coming to a 4X4 track near you very soon.

So what should we build next?
