And yes, it leaks coals out of the bottom.

Weight is the enemy of the smart, capable 4X4. I love the challenge and process of lightening my 4X4 and camping setup over the years – scrimping a kilo here and there, and watching the benefits roll in.

But, at the same time, rules are made to be broken. And with this product, I have broken them with spectacular fashion. It’s a fire pit. But not any old fire pit… it’s a Land Rover Defender fire pit.

These units are made from laser-cut 3mm stainless steel, so they are incredibly strong and heavy duty. But, of course, they’re also heavy. This unit weighs 22kg. For local overnight trips, I can easily talk myself into justifying the fire pit, because I can have a great fire off the ground. Good airflow makes a great fire, and having a fire pit like this allows plenty of oxygen to feed the chemical reaction.

But for longer runs on the road, I’d find it harder to overlook the weight penalty. There are six pieces in total, including a hotplate that sticks on the top. It packs flat and reasonably small into a canvas carry bag. We cooked up an almighty feast of marinated beef flank and vegies like zucchini, eggplant and capsicum; and it worked really well. The 3mm steel is a great surface to cook on, and you can control the heat in the fire pit quite well.

Cheeky local trips exploring the Blue Mountains and Central West will see this fire pit getting a solid regular workout over the future… keeping us warm with its great ventilation; cooking our grub; and just generally being awesome.
