There aren’t any details just yet, but we can now have a good look at an undisguised 2018 Wrangler. Finally.

Let’s point out the obvious: The red one is the next generation of the Rubicon, shod with BF Goodrich all-terrains. It’s nice to see some solid off-road rubber on a factory car, rather than the flaccid tyres 4WDs often have. It will push the off-road capability hard.

It looks like it’s business as usual, with door hinges, bonnet clamps and a flat windscreen all on display. It’s all been tweaked slightly to improve the drag coefficient, but it’s all 100% Wrangler. The wheels are stuck in the corners, and there’s stacks of room for flex and taller rubber. But are angry eyes going to work with LED headlamps? Oh no!

Of course, there are lots of details we haven’t been able to lock in as yet: Engine and gearbox options have been discussed plenty, without official confirmation (yet). Dana has developed a new line of ‘AdvanTek’ differentials which will stay live front and rear, bolted to a good old-fashioned ladder chassis. All of the details will emerge at the LA Auto Show, so stay tuned!
