Mitsubishi Australia has advised owners of 2011 – 2014 Mitsubishi Tritons that they are now under critical recall and should stop driving their vehicle and have its Takata airbags replaced immediately.
More than 50,000 Mitsubishi Tritons running from 2011 to 2014 are under critical recall according to a notification issued by Mitsubishi Australia. In addition to the Triton, the Nissan Navara D22 and Y61 Patrol is also under critical recall status.
Part of the world-wide Takata airbag recall, Mitsubishi is urging all owners to stop driving their Triton immediately because of the potential danger it poses and contact their local Mitsubishi dealership to have the recall work carried out. Such is the serious nature of the recall, Mitsubishi advised, “Mitsubishi Motors can arrange for your vehicle to either be towed to the place of replacement or for a mobile technician to be sent to the vehicle (or some similar arrangement), so that you do not have to drive the vehicle in order to receive a replacement airbag”.
The issue with some Takata airbags is that, as it gets older, a combination of high temperatures and humidity can cause the airbag inflator propellant to degrade. If an affected vehicle is involved in a collision triggering the airbag, the metal inflator housing may explode under too much internal pressure and fire shrapnel through the cabin.
